Reimagned Branding.

Death Cigarette 2020 is a series of typographic studies that takes inspiration from Italian Futurism & UK brand Death Cigarettes. In 1991, most tobacco companies denied any ill effects of smoking. The branding was all about lifestyle; the cowboy, sophisticate, artist; imaginary beliefs, all lies with death being the only undeniable truth. Death Cigarettes stripped away these lies, focusing on truth, not for truth’s sake, but to rebrand. This showed me the power of branding and how products can be / were sold  differently in different places.

I responded by experimenting with sketching, creative writing like psychogeographical derive, deconstructing my experience of walking and smoking. This led me to reimagine the Death Cigarette box, which I translated into video, almost like an advertising campaign. I wanted to explore the dark idea surrounding industrialised tobacco; that despite mainstream conversation mostly demonising cigarettes, there is still this glorified fantasy portrayed by advertising. The mostly digital editing technique I used was a form of screen based collage, inspired by David Carson’s offgrid designs, taking an image, warping it, making pixels disappear to create new information. Much like Marinetti, I’m glorifying the potential of new technologies, recognizing the beauty of its speed and the power of our digital age in a way that builds on Italian Futurist ideas.
